Bulgarian cuisine is rich in spices, herbs and condiments. Many of those spices are indigenous to the region and are so unique and flavorful that often people who visit Bulgaria and try them, fall in love with the unique taste and adopt them in their own cooking.

Bulgaria spices date milenia back. Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in the World. Even before it was a country, people had been living on its land for many centuries. In fact Plovdiv, the second largest city of Bulgaria, is the 6th oldest city in the world!

Much like Bulgaria, Bulgarian cooking traditions are centuries old and date back to the times when our ancestors were putting the foundations of that 6th oldest city in the world. And while they were shoveling away dirt to build those old-timey houses, the ancient Bulgarian folk stepped on some grass and some peculiar aroma caught the attention of their noses. This was how the first Bulgarian spices were discovered. Or at least our recollection of it.

There are many varieties of Bulgarian spices but possibly the most famous and recognizable are savory, parsley, dill, djodjen, coriander, cumin, fenugreek, samardala, tarragon, lovage, thyme, bay leaf, etc.

Bulgaria is also famous with its many unique spice mixes, which taste define Bulgaria to many of the people who had tried them. Such spice mixes are Trapezna Savory Chubritsa, Sharena Salt, Sharena Salt Balkan Style, Panagyurska Style, Pirin Style, Rodopksa Style, Shopska Styke, Panagyurska Style, Table Salt Samardala, Balkanska Rasenitsa, etc.

Bulgarians use spices not only for their aromas and meal enhancing capabilities but also for the health benefits the herbs come with. There is a whole chapter in the Medicine textbooks devoted to the healing effects and health benefits of Bulgarian spices and herbs. Enjoy the magical world of Bulgarian spices!
